Feels like fall…

Today was overcast, breezy and seemed chillier as the day went on.  While going out to check the mailbox this afternoon I also noticed a slight mist in the air, just briefly.  I love this type of day.  When we arrived in Portland last spring the weather was cool and rainy, and there was a day just like today in late May when I first walked up the huge hill to the park and rejoiced in the fact that it was in the 90s back in Florida.  The cool misty sky with low clouds and a brisk breeze is very conducive to pondering and musing; such weather blows the cobwebs of the mind away.

Last evening I began reading the book “The Best of Everything” by Rona Jaffe.  Published in 1958, the story takes place in the early 1950s, it’s rather like “Mad Men” in reverse; business life as told from the viewpoint of the New York working girl.  The story centers around three girls, in fact; one who’s escaped the country life, one who’s trying to escape a broken heart, and one who’s trying to maintain while launching an acting career.   Just reading the first few chapters reminded me that the range of women’s choices was so narrow, in every area of life.  More on this as I read through the book.

Hope everyone is having a quiet evening…

  1. I love fall too. We’re getting into the low 60’s at night – it’s wonderful 🙂

Thank you for the book review. I like Mad Men and wondered if there was something from the woman’s point of view. I’ll have to check out the book your are reading!

  2. ive been noticing fall more too. its gorgeous. the trees in my neighborhood are so many different colors. you dont really get that in florida.

(by the way: this past summer was the hottest summer on record for my old town of gainesville, something like 40+ days in a row of temps in the 90’s. im so glad i wasnt there for that!!!!)
