While driving downtown today, we had the pleasure of driving on 5th Avenue next to Portland’s Vintage Trolley, a replica of the old trolley cars used in Portland from 1904 to 1950. These cars run from early March to late December, on Sundays only, and the 30-minute round-trip ride is free!
We drove the entire length of the avenue with the trolley next to us, and at each intersection the motorman sounded the cheerful clang-clang, which reminded me of one of my favorite songs by Judy Garland:
One of the things I love so much about this performance is that it was filmed in one take; it is said Judy made an error in the lyrics (the error is said to be “buzz, buzz, buzz, went the trolley”, but having watched the movie, Meet Me in St. Louis, many times and in closely watching this clip, I have not seen or heard that anywhere in the song. Regardless, for any slight error there would normally have been another take, but this performance was otherwise so perfect and exuberant it was rightfully left in the film; another take would hardly have been as fresh and alive. Judy gleefully takes us along on this giddy, delightful and breathless description of the feelings experienced on finding a new love; can there be anything more cheerful?
