Some writers either don’t enjoy using prompts or do not find them helpful; I do, especially if they encourage me to stretch my imagination and skills. Several days a week I use a prompt to jumpstart my writing first thing in the morning. Prompts can be found at many sites pertaining to writing and in many publications, but my favorites are the ones from Patchwork Farm. One can view the current prompt, past prompts and request a PDF file of prompts from the past four years.
For me, prompts bring back pleasant memories of school days when a teacher would say, “Okay, class, today I want you to write a theme on _____.” I can think of plenty of things to write about, but having my horizons widened by thinking about and having to write about something I wouldn’t have otherwise considered is good for me.
If you enjoy writing, give prompts a try!
